Frank Stern
1924 - 2004

Died peacefully at Joseph Brant Hospital, in Burlington, on November 29, 2004, at age 80, from anaplastic thyroid cancer.   He was the Chairman and CEO of Stern Laboratories Inc., which he founded in 1988 and where he worked until the week of his death.

Born in Breslau, Germany, Frank emigrated to England in 1939.   He graduated in 1950 with a B.Sc. in Engineering from the University of London, England, and married his wife Jane in 1951.   A year later they moved to Canada, where Frank joined the Motor Division of Canadian Westinghouse in 1955, soon transferring to the newly formed Atomic Power Division.   At the Chalk River Laboratories of Atomic Energy Canada, he was part of a group that pioneered Canada's nuclear power industry.   He returned to Hamilton in 1959, securing contracts that lead to the formation of the Westinghouse Systems Test Laboratory in 1962.

In 2003, the Canadian Nuclear Society honoured Frank with the Outstanding Contribution Award, for his innovative thermalhydraulic research.

Frank was an avid athlete, who until mid-November followed his daily mile-long swim with a walk of at least three miles.   He always preferred climbing stairs to riding elevators and at age 75 went high-altitude trekking in the Andes.   Contemporaries will remember him as an impassioned engineer, younger professionals as a valued mentor.

Beloved husband of the late Jane L. Stern, Frank is survived by companion Diane Cherny, sons Paul (Anthea) and Eric, daughters Anne (Craig) and Karen (Mark), grandchildren Melanie (Martin), Evelyn, Amanda, Kate, Gemma, Henry, Lane and Cole, and his schnauzer, Lucie.

Friends are invited to join the family to remember Frank at The Edgewater Manor Restaurant, 518 Fruitland Road, Stoney Creek, (QEW, Fruitland Road exit, by the lake) between the hours of noon and three, on Saturday, December 4th.   Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
